Sealing Your Own Driveway: What It Takes

Sealing your own driveway is a real option and plenty of people should. Here is the material maths, what a day of it actually involves, and the parts that make people stop halfway and call somebody.

How much sealer a driveway actually drinks

Coverage is printed on every pail and drum, and it varies by product, but the working numbers are close to this for one coat:

A 5 gallon pail covers roughly 250 to 400 square feet.
A 55 gallon drum covers roughly 2,700 to 4,400 square feet.

The spread is not marketing. A smooth driveway sealed three years ago takes the top of that range. An old, rough, porous surface that has never been sealed drinks the bottom of it, and sometimes less. Measure first and buy for the low number. Running out with a quarter of the driveway left, on a day when the weather is right, is the single most common way this goes wrong.

A typical two car driveway of about 900 square feet is therefore three pails, and you should buy four.

What it costs to do it yourself

Prices move, and they moved up this year, so treat these as autumn 2026 numbers from the aisle rather than quotes:

Sealer: roughly $20 to $35 a 5 gallon pail at a big box store. Drums are cheaper per gallon if you can get one home and handle it.
Crack filler: a few dollars a tube for small work, more for pourable filler by the gallon. Cracks get filled first, always.
Tools: a proper squeegee or application brush, $25 to $45. A stiff broom. Tape for the garage apron and the concrete. A blower if you have one.

So a two car driveway usually lands somewhere near $100 to $180 in material the first time, plus a day. That is a genuine saving against hiring it out, and it is the honest reason to do it yourself.

The day

Where the time actually goes

Almost nobody overestimates the coating. Everybody underestimates the cleaning.

Cleaning, about half the job. Blow it off, sweep it, cut the grass back off the edges where it has crept over the asphalt, scrub the oil spots and treat them so the sealer will bond. Sealer over dirt peels, and it peels in exactly the shape of the dirt.
Crack filling. Anything you can slide a nickel into gets filled and left to set. Sealer is not a filler. It sinks into an open crack and reappears as a line in weeks.
Cutting in the edges by hand with a brush, around the garage, the apron and any borders. This is slow and it is what separates a tidy job from an obvious one.
The coat itself, pulled in overlapping passes, working toward your way out so you never seal yourself into a corner.

For one person on a 1,000 square foot driveway, that is most of a Saturday, and the driveway is then out of use until the next day.

Weather

The window you have to hit

Fifty degrees and rising, no rain for at least 24 hours after, and enough daylight left that the coat is not still wet when the evening dew lands. In Ohio that rules out most of October evenings and all of the winter. If the forecast is borderline, wait. A coat that gets rained on before it cures comes off in patches, and you buy the material twice.

Worth knowing before you start

Where people stop and call someone

Handling a drum. A full 55 gallon drum of sealer weighs around 500 pounds. It is not coming out of a pickup bed without equipment or several people, and it is not something to improvise with a ramp.
Mixing. Sealer settles hard. It has to be stirred properly all the way to the bottom, and again as you work, or the first half of the driveway gets the good material and the rest gets water.
Running short. See the coverage maths. Half a driveway coated at 6pm with the shops closed is the worst spot to be in.
Cleanup and disposal. Empty pails, a ruined squeegee, and sealer on the concrete apron that has to come off before it cures.

None of that is a reason not to do it. It is just the part nobody mentions.

Doing it well

Four things that separate a good DIY coat from an obvious one

Do not water it down. The ratio on the pail is the manufacturer's, not a suggestion. Stretching it is the single most common reason a home sealed driveway looks grey again by the second spring.
Thin and even beats thick. A heavy coat does not cure properly in the middle, and it is what cracks and peels later. Pull it out rather than pouring it on.
Tape the concrete. The apron, the garage floor edge and any walkway. Sealer on concrete is permanent enough that it is worth ten minutes of tape.
Work toward your exit, in overlapping passes, and keep a wet edge. Stopping for twenty minutes in the middle of a driveway leaves a line you will see for two years.

And block the driveway off when you are done. A neighbour who has not noticed drives across the end of it, and the tyre marks are permanent.
