Roughly late April through mid-October, and the temperature rule is stricter than most people assume. Sealer is a water-based product that has to cure, not dry, and Ohio gives you a narrower window for that than the calendar suggests.
The specification on the drum is a surface temperature above 50F and an air temperature above 50F, rising, and holding above 50F for the whole cure. That last part is where jobs go wrong. A sunny 58 degree afternoon in early April that drops to 38 overnight does not meet it. The coat is still curing when the temperature falls, and a coat that cures cold never reaches the hardness it was meant to reach.
You do not see this on the day. It looks like a finished driveway. You see it the following year, when the coat wears through early in the traffic lanes and starts lifting at the edges.
This is the single most common reason a sealcoating job underperforms in this part of the country, and it is entirely a scheduling decision.
In the Dayton area that works out to roughly late April through mid-October. The exact edges move a couple of weeks either way depending on the year, and they are set by overnight lows rather than by daytime highs.
The middle of that window, June through early September, is the easy part. Long days, warm nights, quick cure, low risk. The two ends are where judgment is required.
Early spring looks tempting because the driveway has come out of winter looking rough and you want it dealt with. The problem is the overnight low. Late April is usually the earliest date that holds.
Late season is the more interesting one, because the winter is the thing you are protecting against. A coat that goes down in late September goes into the freeze and thaw cycle at full strength, which is exactly when you want it. The constraint is that the days are shorter and the nights are cold, so the working part of the day gets narrow, and once we are into the back half of October it stops being worth risking.
If your driveway needs it and you have the choice, late season has the better argument. The damage in this climate comes from water getting into the asphalt and freezing, so a fresh coat going into November is doing its job on day one. A coat applied in May has already taken a summer of UV and traffic before it meets the winter it was bought for.
The practical counterweight is availability. Everybody who spent the summer meaning to get around to it books in September, so the last few weeks of the season fill up first and there is nowhere to move a rained-out job to. If you are going late, book early.
The surface has to be dry going down and it has to stay dry while it cures. In practice that means no rain for about 24 hours beforehand and a clear window of at least 24 hours afterwards. Rain on a coat that has not cured washes it off the driveway, streaks it into the gutter, and means doing the whole job again.
Because of that, sealcoating gets rescheduled. A contractor who will not move a job off a day with rain in the forecast is telling you something about how the rest of the work will be done. If it rains on your date, the job moves, and that is the correct outcome rather than an inconvenience.
In September and October there is a second problem the summer does not have. Heavy dew forms overnight once the nights get cool, and dew settling on a coat that has not finished curing does much the same thing as light rain. That is why late season work starts early in the day and stops early, rather than running to the last of the daylight.
Walking on it, a few hours. Parking on it, 24 to 48 hours depending on the temperature and the humidity, and you will get a specific window at scheduling rather than a guess.
The one that catches people is turning the wheels of a parked car on a coat that is cured but still green. Power steering on a stationary car scuffs a fresh coat easily in the first week or so. Pull in straight, and roll rather than turn on the spot until it has had a few warm days.
Two things to have done before the crew arrives: cars off the driveway including anything sitting on the apron, and sprinklers near the drive switched off for the day. An irrigation zone coming on at four in the morning onto a fresh coat is the same outcome as rain.
Test the driveway in spring, when you can see what the winter did to it. If the tests say it needs doing, you then have the whole season to place it rather than calling round in a panic in October.
