Butler County is two places at once. Down the Great Miami River are Hamilton and Middletown, old mill cities with older streets. Along I-75 are West Chester and Liberty Township, built out in subdivisions within living memory. We sealed a drive in Middletown on 10 September, and the three biggest places in the county each handle street work their own way.
Hamilton, Middletown, Fairfield, West Chester Township, Liberty Township, Fairfield Township, Monroe, Trenton, Oxford, Ross Township, Seven Mile and Millville. Middletown's east edge crosses into Warren County, and the same drive gets the same answer on either side of that line.
The Great Miami runs straight through Hamilton, with the city on both banks, and past Middletown on its way south. Both grew up as industrial towns, Hamilton with its paper mills and Middletown with its steel works, and both have a core of older houses on narrow lots close to downtown.
Older driveways in older neighbourhoods tend to have been patched more than once, by different people, with different materials. You can see it as squares and strips of slightly different colour, each with its own seam. Every seam is a joint water can find. On a drive like that the crack filling is most of the job, the patch edges get attention before any sealer goes down, and the honest quote says whether the drive has one more good coat in it or has reached the point where an overlay is the better money.
The south east of the county has filled with subdivisions along I-75, and State Route 129 now links Hamilton to the interstate through Liberty Township. Neighbourhoods there tend to have wider two and three car drives, often with a turnaround or side pad, and many sit inside a homeowners association that sets rules for exterior work and a common look along the street.
A wide drive means more area and more edge, and a street of them built at the same time tends to need sealing at the same time. Oxford, out west, is different again: a college town built around Miami University, with a lot of rental housing. Owners with several houses there can send the list and get a sheet per address.
The Hamilton rule is the one that trips people up. Many aprons, curbs and walks there are concrete, and the city only permits concrete work in the right-of-way by a contractor holding its license, so apron work in Hamilton is only taken on when the contractor on it already holds the license the city asks for. Sealing and crack filling behind the sidewalk are not listed as permit work by any of these.

It depends which road the house is on. The township's roads division is the first call, and county roads go through the Butler County Engineer. We check the road before quoting.
